It is hard to believe that almost $2 billion is spent annually on advertising pharmaceuticals, yet, there is very little investment to advertise medicinal marijuana. Culture has a very high impact on both legal and illegal use and sales of marijuana. There are so many influences that can cause instant fluctuations within this market.
In the legal aspect, marijuana for medicinal purposes in Canada has seen little awareness for the public on how to access this drug. The federal government has high projections for the amount of medicinal marijuana purchased by Canadians by licensed dealers. It seems that there should be some budget for a marketing plan to communicate to doctors and public patients on how this new medicinal drug can be obtained.
When we take a look into the illegal industry of the cannabis drug, culture has major impact. The fact that some states in the United States are starting to lean toward the legalization of the drug will give it a test for society on how it effects the world. The legalization will cause a high degree of price change, consumption and potential crime rates may see an increase.
A research report was conducted by Dr. Mark Anderson, from The University of Montana State on the legalization and its implications. Through research he is expecting to see a price drop of 40% after 4 years after cannabis becomes legalized. He also states that consumption rates will increase if the drug is no longer illegal which will lead to a reduction in alcohol drinking rates. Personally, I would be very interested to see if the same conclusions would be drawn in legalization in Canada as they are in the States.
It is clear that culture has a very important role in both the legal and illegal marijuana industries. As more and more states are starting to lean towards the legalization, it is going to be very interesting to see its cultural impact.
